Olympic Readathon: Other People We Married by Emma Straub

Other People We Married is a short story collection by Emma Straub — I’ve heard tons of good things about her writing and her first novel comes out this fall.

Straub’s short stories are definitely good. The collection has a range of stories — some I didn’t really like and some I LOVED. I think this is a good thing because you get a good idea of an author’s skill. Even when I didn’t like the story, her writing was still superb. I shouldn’t say I didn’t like a few…I think it’s just that my favorite story (“Abraham’s Enchanted Forest”) is in the middle of the collection so the second half paled in comparison.

Also…I love looking at this cover. It’s like fall and fire and (kind of) our wedding colors all in one.

Definitely a great collection and a reminder to me that I should read more short story collections. I hope Straub’s stories make it into future English literature textbooks. Definitely better reads than some of those stories I had to read in high school — I’m pretty sure all of those dull stories are why I don’t read short story collections very often…or ever.

585 pages finished…1415 to go!

  1. I loved this collection. Imalways feel a little meh about a few stories in any collection. Her novel coming out next month is fantastic though.
